Circus

In my pictures I tried to capture the sense of wonder and dream I was sharing with the children...

In 2008 I was asked to join a group of Italian artists to document their tour around Albania while they were taking the circus to internal villages of Tirana province. The idea was to perform in schools, streets, squares – wherever children could gather and join in the performance. Circus, clownerie, street theatre and puppetry were mixed with Sicilian ‘cunto’ – a form of traditional oral storytelling where stories are often told through the performance of string puppets ‘Pupi’. In my pictures I tried to capture the sense of wonder and dream I was sharing with the children – a sense of joy and freedom for being able to jump on the caravan of the circus passing by.

This is the story of a journey into the unresolved questions of the Middle Eastern conflict which are still being addressed today, ninety years after my great-grandfather’s journey. In a land divided by a wall that in his time would have been unthinkable, today it seems that his dream has been destroyed forever. But in this ongoing state of conflict – the power of his voice still resonates.
